Committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Sustainability is at the core of RWMT’s business and has been a prerequisite for obtaining environmental permits around the world. Cooperation between civil society, researchers and industry is the key to achieving these goals and we view our role in the private sector as crucial in supporting the initiatives.

Leave no one behind

The 193 member states of the United Nations agreed to 17 global goals to create a better world by 2030. These 17 goals and 169 targets are the most ambitious agreement on sustainable development ever adopted.

Robert Wilson Marine Technologies (RWMT) is proud to join the companies that are committed to achieving these global goals, built on the commitment to ‘leave no one behind’.

We are doing this for the future of the planet, but also because sustainable businesses have a major competitive advantage when nations and governmental agencies are trying to identify and address the environmental risks that have developed over decades.

We have identified five of the SDGs where we as a company can contribute the most.

Goal 3 – Good health and well-being

Why
Most countries, especially poor countries, have insufficient health facilities, medical supplies and health care workers for the surge in demand. The Covid-19 crisis has disrupted or reversed decades of improvements in world health.
Ensuring healthy lives for all requires a strong commitment, but the benefits outweigh the cost. Healthy people are the foundation for healthy economies.

What we do
RWMT plan to set up local health clinics in the areas where we are based long-time. The clinics will be staffed by international volunteers and totally free to the local community.

Targets
Target 3.C – Increase health financing and support health workforce in developing countries

Global target 3

Goal 4 – Quality Education

Why
Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping poverty. Education helps reduce inequalities and reach gender equality and is crucial to fostering tolerance and more peaceful societies. Over the past decade, major progress has been made towards increasing access to education and school enrollment rates at all levels, particularly for girls. Nevertheless, about 258 million children and youth were still out of school in 2018 — nearly one fifth of the global population in that age group.

What we do
RWMT work to improve the education in the areas where we are based long-time. We do so by sponsoring local schools and through our volunteer-program.

Targets
Target 4.1 – Free primary and secondary education

Target 4

Goal 6 – Clean water and sanitation

Why
Water is essential not only to health, but also to poverty reduction, food security, peace and human rights, ecosystems and education. Nevertheless, countries face growing challenges linked to water scarcity, water pollution, degraded water-related ecosystems and cooperation over transboundary water basins.
By managing our water sustainably, we are also able to better manage our production of food and energy and contribute to decent work and economic growth. Moreover, we can preserve our water ecosystems, their biodiversity, and take action on climate change.

What we do
RWMT helps to locate and identify hazardous waste that has been dumped into the ocean, but that can be salvaged. This reduces the risk of spreading environmental pollutants in waterways, lakes and oceans. RWMT's sustanable technology for sub-bottom scanning has led to long-term collaborations for the conservation of the marine echosystems surrounding the Galápagos islands.

Targets
Target 6.6 – Protect and restore water-related ecosystems

Global target 6

Goal 8 – Decent work and economic growth

Why
Sustained and inclusive economic growth can drive progress, create decent jobs for all and improve living standards.
Decent work means opportunities for everyone to get work that is productive and delivers a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration. A continued lack of decent work opportunities, insufficient investments and under-consumption lead to an erosion of the basic social contract underlying democratic societies: that all must share in progress.

What we do
RWMT strives to generate productive employment and job opportunities for the local communities where we work on a long-time basis. Our goal is that at least 50 percent of the personnel is hired from the local community. We offer wages at the same level as, or higher than, the average local wages.

Targets
Target 8.5 – Full employment and decent work with equal pay

Global target 8

Goal 14 – Life below water

Why
Oceans are our planet’s life support and regulate the global climate system. They are the world’s largest ecosystem, home to nearly a million known species and containing vast untapped potential for scientific discovery. Despite the critical importance of conserving oceans, decades of irresponsible exploitation have led to an alarming level of degradation. Current efforts to invest in ocean science are not yet meeting the urgent need to safeguard this vast, yet fragile, resource.

What we do
RWMT’s technique of examining bottom sediments without affecting the environment avoids polluting the seas by digging or test drilling in the bottom sediment. Our ability to scan the oceans in a sustainable way has led to several, long-term collaborations for the monitoring, conservation and restoration of the coastal and marine echosystems surrounding the Galápagos islands.

Targets
Target 14.1 – Reduce marine pollution
Target 14.2 – Protect and restore ecosystems
Target 14.5 – Conserve Coastal and marine areas
Target 14.A – Increase scientific knowledge, research and technology for ocean health
